When you start out as a newbie blogger, there are loads of terms that sound frighteningly techie when all you want to do is write, publish and post to social media. WordPress can be a bit off-putting to some first-time bloggers as it doesn’t hand hold you in the way that various theme-hosting packages do, such as Squarespace or Wix.
Now, I believe that if a something is worth doing, it’s worth doing well, which brings me back to WordPress as my go-to blogging platform every time. I’ve tried others, but nothing beats WordPress for the sheer flexibility it offers. I like to think of it growing with me as I learn more, become more au fait with the backend and get less scared of anything techie.
There’s immense satisfaction from know your blog is build on robust foundations when the time comes to expand it to new heights, and add more features. You can rest assured knowing that it’s open source – ie, there’s no hidden proprietary code that only a single company owns; and that you can find, usually at minimal expense, a more techie coder type to help build complex add-ons.
My top 8 pick of plugins below represents those I automatically put on any new blog from day one. They are the nuts and bolt in the main but also add some great features such as allowing you to have easy ways to social share your posts and therefore entice a tribe to your blog goodies even when you’re in start up mode.
No tech required to put these on our WordPress site and even if you have some issues working out options to configure them, you can bet your bottom dollar there’s a helpful post out there to Google to ensure you get it right.
